The future of antibiotic use in livestock

A study predicts that global livestock antibiotic use could reach 143,481 tons by 2040, a 29.5% increase from the 2019 baseline. However, alternative scenarios could vary by 14.2% to -56.8%. The Livestock Biomass Conversion method, a novel indicator, improves accuracy in estimating livestock biomass. The findings emphasize the need for coordinated efforts targeting both antibiotic use intensity and livestock biomass to achieve significant reductions in antibiotic use quantity.
